One of the questions I’m often asked here at Gracie’s House is whether I can come to a customer’s home to paint or upcycle a piece of furniture on-site. While I completely understand the appeal — especially if it’s a large or well-loved item — I wanted to take a moment to explain why I don’t offer a home visit painting service, and why doing the work in my dedicated workshop is so important for the quality and longevity of each piece I finish.
Good Furniture Painting Is All About Preparation
A beautifully finished piece of furniture isn’t just about the final coat of paint — it’s about everything that happens before that moment. Proper preparation is absolutely essential. In my workshop, each piece goes through a careful process of cleaning, sanding, filling, and priming, with every step tailored to the condition and material of the furniture.
In a home environment, it’s nearly impossible to replicate these controlled conditions. Dust, pet hair, humidity, and fluctuating temperatures can all interfere with how the products perform and how well they adhere to the surface. Even something as simple as a small draft can affect the smoothness of a finish or the drying time of a coat.
Timing Between Coats Matters More Than You Think
One of the most overlooked parts of furniture painting is leaving the correct amount of time between each coat of primer, paint, and topcoat. In my workshop, I allow every layer to dry and cure for as long as it needs — not just until it feels dry to the touch, but until it’s properly ready for the next stage.
This ensures a strong, durable finish that won’t chip, peel, or mark easily. Rushing this process — or working in a space where conditions aren’t ideal — increases the risk of future problems with the paintwork. In a home setting, it’s very difficult to allocate the necessary time and space for this without disruption, which is why I prefer to work in my own dedicated, controlled environment.
Creating the Best Possible Finish
Ultimately, my goal with every piece is to create a finish that not only looks beautiful but lasts. The techniques I use, the specialist products I choose, and the environment I work in are all part of what makes a Gracie’s House piece special. It’s this commitment to quality that means I can stand by my work, knowing it’s been finished to the highest standard.
While a home visit might seem like a quick and convenient option, it just wouldn’t allow me to uphold the same level of care, attention, and craftsmanship that goes into each piece I create.
Thank You for Understanding
I truly appreciate every enquiry and the trust my customers place in me with their furniture. If you have a piece you’d love to see transformed, I’m always happy to chat about collection and delivery options to safely bring it to and from my workshop. This way, I can give it the time, attention, and surroundings it deserves.
