I've been working on this fabulous vintage green painted drawers. I wanted to create an authentic, chippy, cracked and layered look to give the impression it had been painted over the years. I use Dixie Belle Products all the time, but both colours and the Crackle product were all products I hadn't used before.

It was in quite a sorry state with years of wax build up. Firstly I hoovered any loose dust and bits from the entire piece, then the wax needed to be removed. The best way to remove wax is white spirits and wire wool, it's an icky job, but very satisfying when done.

Half the knobs were missing or broken so they got removed and discarded. Then I gave it all another scrub done with a degreaser just to make sure its completely rid of nasties, and finally rinsed it all off to remove any residues.

I love the look of old layers of paint that tell the story of the piece of painted furniture. To create this vintage green painted chest of drawers I used the following products.

First I used 2 layers of Mint Julep around the edges then added some Crackle. If you look at the photo you can see where the crackle has been applied, it makes the green look slightly darker, in fact its just more glossy looking when its dry (it doesn't effect the final finish)

So after thats completely dry I applied the Kudzu green, I did the top and front first and I have to be honest this was my first try at using the Crackle product and thought I must've done something wrong, nothing much seemed to happen. So I carried on regardless (it needed to be painted either way) and oh happy days by the time I'd done both the sides the magic had worked. Now I didn't apply the Crackle product with a heavy hand, the more you apply the bigger you can expect the cracking.

You can also add some heat to speed things up, I used a hair dryer. Next I used a high grit sanding pad to distress back and reveal more of the lovely Mint Julep underneath.

Extra Details

I drilled new holes, fitted the new handles, and measured and cut new drawers liners. I use wallpaper for most of my drawer liners, and leave them loose so they can be removed and replaced easily.
